My Story!

Hello all! Welcome to my travel blog for the summer of 2011. My name is Tanner Garcia, and I work with my family aboard our boat, the 165 foot Research Vessel Aquila. This summer we are traveling the Pacific as part of the Pacific Islands Restoration Project, a multinational effort to rid a number of islands of invasive rat species. This summer we will also be the worlds smallest aircraft carrier (ha!) with a full air wing consisting of two Bell Jetranger helicopters and four remote-control models our chief engineer brought along! For those that aren't familiar with the process, the main method we are using for the eradication is arial broadcast of poisoned bait pellets. Where needed, the helicopters will also be supported by hand broadcast teams on the ground. So that's what is goin' down, but where?? The baiting islands are Palmyra Atoll, the Phoenix Islands of Kiribati, and Henderson Island. The Aquila and our family are based out of Seattle, Washington. All of the major prep of the boat happened in Seattle, but the major resupply ports for us are: Honolulu Hawaii, Apia Samoa, and Mangareva in French Polynesia. This is the condensed version of our summer, for all the juicy details, keep reading!! Adios!

Palmyra in the morning!

Well guys that pretty much says it all, after one long day and three better days we're 40 miles out!!! We would get in about midnight but the refuge managers dont want us coming through the channel in the dark so we gotta wait until morning. Today was a very productive day and even though I'm dead tired it feels good. Gromyko and Chris did an acid wash on the whole boat, it's amazing how much rust that stuff can take off. The decks around the wheelhouse are almost white now! Most of my day was spent sweating and swearing in the engine room, but right before dinner I finally got the new jet fuel pump all wired in and tested. Tomorrow will be another long day for sure but it should be tons of fun. Coming in the channel there will be at least four GoPros on duty so plenty of pics and video. I can't wait to see how the Atoll has changed the last seven years, hopefully the caretakers have been good to her, but we'll see in the morning. As soon as we get in and tied up i think the plan to is start unloading all the TNC and Fish and Wildlife gear and supplies, then the fun stuff... Building a couple helicopters!! For the ride down we had to take the rotor blades, mast, and skids off so they would fit in a standard 40ft shipping container. Can't wait to see it all go back together though! Thats all the time I have for tonight, I'm actually on watch for the next two hours so I better get going. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come!!
